Latania verschaffeltii, commonly known as the Red Latan Palm, is a striking and visually impressive palm native to the islands of Mauritius and Réunion in the Indian Ocean. This palm is celebrated for its vibrant foliage and distinctive trunk, making it a sought-after specimen for tropical and subtropical gardens as well as indoor collections.
The Red Latan Palm typically grows to a height of 6-10 meters (20-33 feet), with a solitary trunk that can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in diameter. The trunk is covered with leaf scars and has a distinctive, slightly rough texture. The palm's most notable feature is its large, fan-shaped leaves, which are deep green with a unique red or purple tinge, especially when young. The leaves are arranged in a crown at the top of the trunk and can grow up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) in diameter. The palm produces small, yellowish flowers that are followed by round, black fruits, which add to the palm's overall appeal.
Latania verschaffeltii thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate partial shade.
